Zarr's characters in this book are so very real. Mandy's thoughts are so familiar to me- she's so many of the girls with whom I grew up, she's the girl I narrowly escaped being. Jill is more recognizable as a modern YA literature protagonist, and she's well-drawn indeed but she wasn't ever my best friend. This involving story of two remarkable young women's inner lives (both literal and figurative) is written extraordinarily well. I was drawn in and mesmerized by the characters. I did find the ending a little too, too though it was certainly within the realm of possibility given what we learn about the characters. Really well-done.
