The Dog Stars

The Dog Stars - Peter Heller I've read complaints about Heller's fragmented prose, but I found it not unlike reading thought. I don't think in complete sentences, either. Nor did the dialogue's absence of quotation marks trouble me. However, you know what's going to happen when there's an old dog at the beginning of the book and that was one of the rawest parts. There's a lot of raw now-ness here. The eternal present. How to find scraps of beauty, happiness, and love in a re-formed world. Bleak, certainly. Redemptive, too, though. And moments, scattered throughout, like this:"Grief is an element. It has its own cycle like the carbon cycle, the nitrogen. It never diminishes not ever. It passes in and out of everything."I thought it was a wonderful book.
