I thought Wittlinger's Parrotfish was brilliant. This, not so much. Admittedly, I did not read the first book, Hard Love, but this was a stand-alone story about Marisol, an 18-year-old who falls in love with her considerably older teacher. It's patently obvious that the teacher is Bad News from the beginning. The secondary characters are not particularly interesting, and the real love interest doesn't get enough airplay. Also, Marisol is supposed to be an amazing writer, and the pieces of her writing that the reader is subjected to do not bear out this assertion. A disappointment, I'm afraid.
