I'm wavering on this book. I found it engrossing enough, certainly. It kept me up into the far reaches of the night, and it got in my dreams. However, there was no real question as to the outcome and the ending is worse than a cliffhanger, it's just a full stop in the flow of narrative. It reminded me of the way Roger Zelazny used to end his books, and not in a good way.I think the writing was good but the characters didn't really change or grow- it was a simple linear narrative, with no stopping to reflect, no character maturation, no real depth. There were intriguing characters whose personalities were not explored. The world-building was, I believe, more complete than not- it had that well-thought-out feel- but I'd have liked much more explication.
