I've previously been just lukewarm about Funke, but I really enjoyed this book. Meggie's story alternates between sweet and suspenseful. The premise, that a really good reader can read aloud and cause characters to appear in real life out of the books, is fresh and fun. The tale is well-executed if a bit too long.
